The Kentucky Derby is not just the most iconic horse race in the world, it's also a fashion show with hats that are larger than life. Since the very first race on May 17, 1875, Col. Meriwether Clark Jr. – founder of Churchill Downs and grandson of the famous explorer William Clark – had the vision of modeling the races after British horseracing. Those races had strict dress codes for men and women, and those dress codes typically included hats.
This classic open-faced sandwich was created in the 1920s in Kentucky, at The Brown Hotel in Louisville as a way to feed guests who had been up all night at the hotel's popular evening dinner dance. Made with thinly sliced turkey breast, a smooth and creamy Mornay sauce (a white sauce with cheese), crisp bacon, tomatoes, and a slice of toasted bread, it's an indulgent mess of a sandwich that requires a knife and fork to eat. The Mirage Banquet center will serve their Chef's Hot Brown sandwiches at our dinner buffet on May 2.
The Mint Julep has been a staple of Kentucky Derby events for years. This exhilarating cocktail is composed of bourbon, sugar, mint, and crushed ice.
The Oaks Lily is the official cocktail of the Bluegrass State's other big race, the Kentucky Oaks, held the day before the Kentucky Derby. It features vodka, orange liqueur, cranberry juice, lemon juice, and simple syrup.
