2024 Lame Duck Session Update

Update on the Prolife/Anti-life bills Introduced for the 2023-2024 session

Thank you to everyone who called their state representatives and senators in December!

Due to the tremendous grassroots efforts of making calls and sending emails to legislators, the following bills did NOT pass and “died” on December 31, 2024!

  • SB 1082, “The Reproductive Health Data Privacy Act” - which would have limited information about PRCs from being sent to abortion minded women leaving abortion as the only choice.
  • SB 1151, 1152, 1163, 1164, & 1175, the “Shield Bills” - which would have allowed abortion providers to undermine the laws of other states by allowing mail order abortion pills sent from Michigan abortionists.
  • HB 6086, the “Sex Ed bill” - which would have allowed abortion to be taught as a method of family planning and would have instructed students where and how to get abortions.
  • SB 1182 &1183, the “Funding for IVF bills” - which would have required taxpayers and insurance companies to pay for unlimited IVF including embryo creation, storage, and destruction.
  • SB 987, 988, & 1006, the “Funding for IUD bills” - which would have required all hospitals to stock abortifacient IUDs and would have bundled the cost of postpartum insertion with maternity care.
  • HB 4909, the “Co-guardianship bill” - which would have required co-guardians to jointly consent to emergency medical treatment, thus leading to delays in care.
  • SB 822, the “Patient advocate for pregnant women bill” - which would have opened the door to living wills and would have allowed life sustaining treatment to be withdrawn from pregnant women
  • HB 5833, the “Surrogate medical decision maker bill”– which as worded would have allowed living wills from other states to be used in Michigan.
  • SB 678-681, “Physician assisted suicide bills” which would have allowed medical providers to assist their patients with committing suicide by prescribing lethal doses of drugs.
  • HB 6275 & 6276, the “Face Act bills” – which would have created state level prohibitions on blocking abortion clinic entrances similar to the federal law.

Unfortunately, HB 5435 & 5436, the bills allowing pharmacists to prescribe birth control, did pass. This allows pharmacists to prescribe the abortifacient morning-after-pill, Ella, to minors without parental consent. All prolife endorsed representatives and senators voted NO on this bill.
